The Catholic church has a doctrine called ordo amoris, the “order of love”. It is sometimes interpreted as saying that love must begin with God as the highest good, followed by oneself, one’s family, neighbors, fellow citizens, and then the rest of humanity. This understanding was invoked by Vice President J. D. Vance to advocate for America First. What are we UUs to make of this? How should we order our love?
